The Best Time to Book Flights From San Diego

There is no magic Tuesday.
That myth has been around forever, and airlines stopped pricing that way years ago. What is true is that fares from San Diego move in a fairly predictable window, and the window is different depending on where you are headed.
Domestic trips
One to three months out is the sweet spot for most domestic routes from SAN. Book earlier than that and you are usually paying the airline's opening price. Wait until the final three weeks and you are paying the business-traveler price.
Hawaii
Two to five months. Hawaii fares from San Diego swing more than almost any other route we watch — the same nonstop can be $238 one week and $520 the next. This is the route where setting an alert pays off most.
Mexico
One to three months, and be flexible on the return day. A Tuesday return instead of Sunday regularly saves $80 or more to Cabo and Puerto Vallarta.
Europe and Asia
Three to seven months for peak summer. For fall, winter and early spring, deals show up much later and much cheaper — the Madrid and Tokyo fares we get most excited about almost always land two to four months out.
The actual advice
Pick your destination, set an alert, and know roughly what normal looks like. When something lands 30 to 40 percent below normal, book it. That is the whole system.
